IMDb – Once Were Warriors (1994).

Beth Heke Played by Rena Owen: quote: “Our people once were warriors. But unlike you, Jake, they were people with mana, pride; people with spirit. If my spirit can survive living with you for eighteen years, then I can survive anything.” (Thus spoke Beth). This is a powerful and deeply troubling story of a Maori family in New Zealand. Jake, the husband Played by Temuera Morrison is Alcoholic to the max. Alcoholism is tearing this family apart, from stem to stern but you will see no recognition of alcohol being a problem. You will witness its devastation, the wreckage and the pain, you will see Jake unable to get in touch with his humanity in order to save his family and save himself , he is so beaten down by the alcohol.. I liked this film, even though it is hard to watch. The brutality of Jake the husband and father rings true because he does not even realize the effects of his brutality on the family. The character of the family friend Mavis Played by (Mere Boyton) has a very beautiful voice, she sings and sounds like a beautiful bird, and she is really, really attractive. The DVD has some good extras, photo galleries, interviews with the cast and director etc. Just as “Whale Rider” was beautiful and uplifting, “Once Were Warriors” takes you to the dark side…….. I’m left with the memory of after the house party there was blood on the walls, literally, blood on the walls. This is a Strong movie, not for the Squeamish. A 5*****Star Movie.
